Laser Hair Removal

If you live in Dubai, you already know the routine. Shave in the morning, feel stubble by evening. Book a wax, wince through it, then deal with ingrown hairs a week later. Repeat forever.

Most of the people who walk into our clinic aren’t asking whether laser hair removal exists. They’re asking something more practical: Will it actually work on me? How much will it hurt? And how long until I can stop thinking about this?

This guide answers those questions honestly, including the parts some clinics skip over. By the end you’ll know what results to realistically expect, why skin tone matters so much in the UAE, and what you can do to get the most out of every session.

What Laser Hair Removal Actually Does

Laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light that’s absorbed by the pigment (melanin) inside the hair. That light turns into heat, travels down the hair shaft, and damages the follicle, which is the small structure under the skin that produces the hair. A damaged follicle either stops producing hair or produces hair that’s much finer and slower to grow.

The key word there is follicle. Shaving cuts hair at the surface. Waxing pulls it out, but the follicle stays alive and grows a new one. Laser goes after the source, which is why the results last so much longer.

Why one session is never enough

Your hair doesn’t all grow at the same time. At any moment, each follicle is in one of three phases:

  • Anagen (active growth): the hair is connected to the follicle, and this is the only phase where laser works well.
  • Catagen (transition): the hair starts detaching from its blood supply.
  • Telogen (resting): the hair is dormant or about to shed.

Only a portion of your hair is in the anagen phase on treatment day. That’s why sessions are spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, so each visit catches a new group of follicles while they’re actively growing. Most people need 6 to 8 sessions to see solid, long-term reduction.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent? The Honest Answer

Here’s where we want to be straight with you: laser hair removal gives you long-term hair reduction, not a 100% guarantee that every hair is gone forever. The American Academy of Dermatology describes it the same way.

What that looks like in real life:

  • Most treated hair doesn’t come back at all.
  • The hair that does return is usually thinner, lighter, and much slower growing.
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy, PCOS, menopause) can wake up new follicles over time.
  • A maintenance session every 6 to 12 months is enough for most people to keep things smooth.

Be cautious of anyone promising “permanent removal after 3 sessions.” That’s not how hair biology works, and setting the wrong expectation is the fastest way to end up disappointed.

Why Skin Tone Changes Everything (Especially in the UAE)

This is the part that matters most for our patients, and it’s the reason results vary so much from clinic to clinic.

Laser targets melanin. The problem is that your skin also contains melanin. If the laser can’t tell the difference between pigment in the hair and pigment in the skin, it can heat the skin instead, which is how burns and dark patches happen.

Dermatologists group skin using the Fitzpatrick scale, from Type I (very fair, always burns) to Type VI (deeply pigmented, rarely burns). A large share of people in the UAE and wider MENA region fall into Types III to VI: Arab, South Asian, African, and Mediterranean skin. Older laser systems were designed mainly for fair skin with dark hair, and they simply aren’t the safest choice for these tones.

The 1064nm Nd:YAG advantage

At Sasha, we use the Evoline laser system, which works at a 1064nm wavelength (Nd:YAG). That longer wavelength travels deeper and passes through melanin-rich skin more safely, reaching the follicle without overheating the surface. This is why Cleveland Clinic and most dermatology guidance point to Nd:YAG as the preferred option for darker skin types.

For you, that means:

  • Lower risk of burns or pigmentation on medium to dark skin
  • Effective treatment of coarse, deep-rooted hair (beard line, underarms, bikini, back)
  • One system that suits nearly every skin tone we see in Dubai

Before any treatment, our team checks your Fitzpatrick type and hair density so the settings are matched to your skin, not a generic preset.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Short answer: less than waxing, and less than most people expect.

The usual description is a quick warm snap, a bit like a rubber band flicked against the skin. The Evoline system has built-in cooling that numbs the surface between pulses, so the discomfort stays brief.

Which areas feel more sensitive?

  • More sensitive: upper lip, bikini line, underarms. The skin is thinner and the hair is denser.
  • Easier: legs, arms, back, chest. Most patients find these surprisingly comfortable.

One thing worth knowing: sessions tend to get easier as you go. As hair becomes thinner and sparser, there’s less pigment absorbing heat, so each pulse feels milder than the last.

How to make your session more comfortable

  • Shave 24 hours before, not right before, so the skin isn’t freshly irritated.
  • Avoid caffeine just before your appointment if you’re sensitive to discomfort.
  • Tell your practitioner if a spot feels too intense. Settings can be adjusted in real time.
  • Book bikini or underarm sessions away from your period if you notice more sensitivity then.

How Many Sessions Will You Need? A Realistic Timeline

Everyone’s hair is different, but here’s what a typical journey looks like:

Stage

What you’ll notice

Session 1

Treated hair sheds over 1 to 2 weeks. Around 10 to 25% reduction.

Sessions 2 to 3

Patchy regrowth, slower growth between shaves.

Sessions 3 to 4

Clear, visible reduction. Many people shave far less often.

Sessions 6 to 8

Long-term reduction across the area, with fine, sparse regrowth.

Maintenance

Occasional top-up every 6 to 12 months.

Some areas respond faster than others. Legs and underarms often clear quickly. Hormonally driven areas like the chin, jawline, and neck can take a few extra sessions.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

Almost anywhere with unwanted hair, apart from the area directly around the eyes. Our laser hair removal treatment for women covers 12 zones:

  • Upper lip and face
  • Neck
  • Underarms
  • Chest
  • Half arms and full arms
  • Back
  • Bikini
  • Half legs and full legs
  • Full body

Men often come in for the back, chest, shoulders, and beard line shaping. If that’s you, take a look at our dedicated laser hair removal for men page, as coarser male hair usually needs different settings.

Laser vs. Waxing vs. Shaving: Is It Worth It?

It’s a fair question, especially when you look at the upfront cost of a full course.

When you add up years of salon waxing appointments, most people find laser pays for itself. And the benefit that patients mention most isn’t money at all. It’s not having to plan around hair anymore. If budget is the concern, Sasha offers flexible payments through Tabby and Tamara on selected treatments.

Preparing for Your First Session

A little preparation makes a real difference to both comfort and results.

Two weeks before

  • Avoid tanning, sunbeds, and long beach days. Tanned skin raises the risk of irritation.
  • Skip waxing, threading, plucking, and epilators. The laser needs the root in place.

48 hours before

  • Pause retinoids, glycolic acid, and AHA/BHA products on the treatment area.

On the day

  • Shave the area 24 hours in advance.
  • Come with clean skin: no deodorant, perfume, lotion, or makeup on the area.
  • Mention any new medications, especially antibiotics or anything that makes you sun-sensitive.

Aftercare: What to Do After Laser Hair Removal

Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles are normal and usually settle within a few hours. Here’s how to look after your skin:

  • Wear SPF every single day on treated areas. In Dubai’s sun, this isn’t optional.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for 48 hours.
  • Skip the gym and intense heat for 24 hours.
  • Let the treated hair shed naturally over 1 to 2 weeks. Don’t pick or pluck it.
  • Shave between sessions if you want to, but avoid waxing or epilating.

If you notice anything unusual, like blistering or redness that lasts more than a couple of days, contact your clinic. The Mayo Clinic has a useful overview of rare side effects if you want to read more.

Who Should Wait Before Having Laser?

Laser hair removal is safe for most people, but it’s best to postpone if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an active skin infection, open wound, or sunburn on the area
  • Are taking photosensitising medication (some acne and antibiotic treatments)
  • Recently had a chemical peel or laser resurfacing

Tattoos and permanent makeup can’t be lasered over, so your practitioner will work around them.

How to Choose a Laser Hair Removal Clinic in Dubai

The laser matters, but so do the people using it. Before you book anywhere, ask:

  1. Is the clinic licensed by the Dubai Health Authority? A medical licence means proper protocols, hygiene, and accountability.
  2. What laser do they use, and is it suitable for my skin type? If you have medium to dark skin, ask specifically about Nd:YAG 1064nm.
  3. Will they do a skin assessment first? A good clinic won’t treat you without one.
  4. Are they honest about results? “Long-term reduction” is the truthful phrase. “Permanent in 3 sessions” is a red flag.
  5. Do they offer a patch test? Especially useful if you’re nervous or have sensitive skin.
