Botox Aftercare

Botox takes only minutes, and most people go straight back to work. Still, what you do in the first 24 to 48 hours can affect bruising, comfort and how evenly the product settles. This Botox aftercare guide covers the ten things doctors most often ask patients to avoid, and why.

Why Does Aftercare Matter?

Botox needs a few hours to bind to the nerve endings in the treated muscle. During that window, heavy pressure, heat or a big rise in blood flow could, in theory, move some product away from where it was placed. Bruising is also more likely if you thin your blood or strain afterwards.

Good aftercare is simple. It mostly means taking it easy for one day.

10 Things to Avoid After Botox

1. Do Not Rub or Massage the Area

Avoid touching, pressing or massaging treated areas for at least 24 hours. That includes facial massage tools and firm pressure when washing.

2. Do Not Lie Flat for Four Hours

Stay upright for about four hours after treatment. Sitting, walking and normal desk work are fine.

3. Skip the Gym for 24 Hours

Hard workouts raise blood pressure and flush the face. Most doctors advise waiting until the next day. A gentle walk is fine.

4. Avoid Saunas, Steam Rooms and Hot Yoga

Heat increases blood flow and can worsen swelling. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours. In Dubai, it also helps to avoid long periods in strong midday heat on treatment day.

5. Do Not Drink Alcohol That Day

Alcohol can widen blood vessels and make bruising more likely. Skip it for 24 hours.

6. Hold Off on Blood-Thinning Supplements

Fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo and high-dose ibuprofen can increase bruising. Ask your doctor before stopping any prescribed medicine.

7. Avoid Facials, Peels and Laser for Two Weeks

Treatments that involve pressure or heat on the face should wait. A HydraFacial or laser session is best booked before Botox or about two weeks after.

8. Do Not Wear Tight Headbands or Hats

Tight bands across the forehead press on fresh injection points. Leave them off for a day.

9. Do Not Book a Flight Straight After, if You Can Help It

Flying is not dangerous after Botox, but pressure changes and long hours of sitting are uncomfortable if you bruise. If you must fly, it is generally fine. Just keep your hands off your face.

10. Do Not Judge Results Too Early

Botox starts working in 3 to 5 days and reaches full effect at around two weeks. Avoid booking a top-up elsewhere or panicking about unevenness in the first week.

What Is Normal After Botox?

These effects are common and usually pass quickly:

  • Small bumps at injection points that settle within an hour
  • Mild redness for a few hours
  • A small bruise that fades within a week
  • A light headache on the first day

Botox is a prescription form of botulinum toxin, so it is worth knowing which signs need a call to your doctor.

When Should You Call Your Doctor?

Contact your clinic if you notice:

  • A drooping eyelid or brow
  • Difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing (seek urgent care)
  • Signs of infection such as heat, pus or spreading redness
  • Results that look uneven at your two-week review

Serious reactions are rare when a licensed doctor injects you. Even so, choose a clinic that answers the phone after treatment and books a review.

What Can You Do Right Away?

You do not need to hide at home. You can:

  • Return to work or desk-based tasks
  • Apply light makeup after a few hours, using clean brushes
  • Wash your face gently that evening
  • Use sunscreen as normal

Some doctors suggest gently using the treated muscles, such as frowning and raising your brows, for a short time after treatment. Follow your own doctor’s advice on this.
